At Franciscan Oakville Estate each of our wines has its own singular way of expressing the ground from which it was born. Being a vineyard-based company is the essence of our philosophy.
We believe that great wines are a reflection of their terroir - the combination of soil, topography, microclimate and people which makes each site unique. We are committed to strengthening this tie of wine to its soil, to its "somewhereness," so that each of our wines is the stylistic expression of our vineyards.
"Wine is a statement of place." This is the passionately held belief of Vintner Chairman Agustin Huneeus. "We base our future on the fact that wines should be -- and will be -- known for the properties from which they originate rather than their varietal composition. It's more the place than the variety that determines a wine's character."
With our emphasis on terroir, blending plays an important role to create the best, most unique wines from our estate. Historically, the great winemaking cultures have created their finest wines through the art of blending. This is particularly obvious in the finest wines of Bordeaux, where layered complexity comes from filling in elements from a palette of different flavor components. Determining the exact composition of the blend is an art form whereby each of our red wines is crafted to reveal the singular qualities of each Franciscan Oakville Estate vineyard.
